Beliefs about better treatment for HIV leads gay men to engage in riskier sex

A survey spanning 19 years of individuals at a homosexual satisfaction occasion within the US notes a constant improve within the incidence of condomless anal intercourse amongst males, in addition to an increase in what number of intercourse companions they've. Condomless receptive anal intercourse amongst HIV uninfected males has doubled, whereas insertive condomless anal intercourse has greater than tripled amongst HIV-positive males. The findings present that, though antiretroviral therapies (ART) have revolutionized the remedy and prevention of HIV infections, figuring out that they've ART as a protecting back-up in opposition to contracting or transmitting the illness makes individuals complacent. This complacency can result in elevated dangers in the case of intercourse and their well being, says research chief Seth Kalichman of the College of Connecticut in an article in Springer's journal  Archives of Sexual Habits . Trials have proven that early remedy with...

How Thailand eliminated mother-to-child HIV transmission

Such an early, concerted response allowed the country to successfully address the four prongs of the recommended World Health Organization (W HO) elimination strategy. As a result, MTCT rates were reduced from 20-40% in the mid-1990s to 1.9% in 2015 (surpassing the WHO elimination target of <2%). The WHO strategy focuses on the following four prongs: primary prevention of HIV in women of childbearing age; prevention of unintended pregnancies in women living with HIV; prevention of HIV transmission from an HIV-infected woman to her infant; and provision of appropriate treatment, care and support to women and children living with HIV. In Thailand, initiatives to promote condom use, provide information about the risk of transmission and introduce testing for pregnant and post-partum women were successfully implemented. For example, the 100% Condom Programme, which promotes 100% condom use by male patrons of commercial sex workers, has played a crucial role in preventing HIV infe...

Genetics of both virus and patient work together to influence the course of HIV infection

People with HIV experience different rates of disease progression. HIV progresses faster in people with a higher viral load -- the amount of genetic material from the HIV virus found in an infected person's blood. Previous research has shown that an infected person's genetics and the genetics of their particular HIV strain both influence viral load. István Bartha of École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland, and colleagues are now the first scientists to investigate the relative impacts of human and viral genetics on viral load within the same group of patients. The researchers collected patient and viral genetic data from 541 people with HIV. They used a computational modeling method known as linear mixed modeling to determine how human and viral genetics might explain differences in viral load between the patients. They found that genetic differences between HIV strains explain 29 percent of differences in viral load between patients, while human geneti...
